Add MSG for Extraordinary Egg Dishes

umami eggs

Eggs are a staple protein in my fridge that I happily eat on their own or mixed up into some other concoction. I love that they’re an easy mix-in no matter if it’s for a meal, a snack, or as a way to boost the protein in another dish. Sweet, savory, or someplace in between – they all fit. Eggs really are the versatility champs in the kitchen!

Citrus Herb Oil Microwave Eggs

If you haven’t tried out my recipe for Citrus Herb Oil, this recipe is going to be the one you’re going to want to make a batch of it for! We never have enough time in the day, and Chef Mike (aka the microwave) is just as useful a kitchen tool as anything else. Crack a couple of eggs into a microwave-safe dish and give them a mix. Add about a teaspoon of water and a spoonful of the Citrus Herb Oil and mix again. Microwave in 30 second bursts until desired doneness for some of the fluffiest, easiest eggs you’ll ever make.

Dill Pickle Egg Salad

Pickles are having their moment right now, as they should, and I will forever be a pickle stan. Turning up boring egg salad, to me, means adding in chopped dill pickles, a splash of the pickle brine, extra dill (fresh or dried – whatever you got!), green onions, and a sprinkle of MSG. Dunk in your favorite cracker, spread on your bagel, or eat it as-is. I promise you won’t be let down by this rendition!

Chili Crisp Eggs

“Crispy sunny eggs” are how I describe my preferred cooking method of eggs. Is it a technical culinary term? Absolutely not. Does it let all the texture and flavors of an egg shine? Absolutely. Instead of using butter or oil to fry your egg, spoon out some of the chili oil from your chili crisp and let your egg(s) cook away until your desired doneness. Spoon on some chili crisp and a pinch of MSG, and you’re ready to roll!

It doesn’t take long to make an egg-straordinary egg dish in the microwave, on the stove, or in the oven. Depending on how much time you have, this can also meet your hunger needs in about a minute or 15, whether you’re making an egg for one or an omelet or frittata for a group. MSG is the perfect way to boost the inherent flavor of eggs, with just a few dashes. Transform it completely by whipping them up and folding into a cake batter for your next celebration. Or go savory and sprinkle in some MSG just as your eggs are about to set, and you serve them alongside a bowl of piping-hot steamed jasmine rice and a drizzle of toasted sesame oil.
